Best Female Drummers

Males have historically dominated the drumming community. Unfortunately, there is also a misconception that women drummers are not musically talented. However, as you will discover in this essay, female drummers are as passionate, talented, and imaginative as their male counterparts!

Viola Smith

Born in Mount Calvary in 1912, Viola Smith is regarded as among the country’s first professional drummers. She studied the playing of Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, eventually developing an almost identifiable level of technical drum brilliance. Viola Smith was well-known for her work with numerous swing bands, orchestral compositions, and pop music endeavors. People began to call her the fastest female drummer because of her electrifying performances. In the 1920s, Viola Smith made her stage debut as the first professional female drummer. She later played in the NBC Symphony Orchestra and made her Broadway debut in the inaugural production of Cabaret. Her distinctive sound was a large kit focused on the toms that attracted parallels to Gene Krupa. Sadly, only a little of her work has survived. She never released any albums, and the finest video footage still exists today features The Coquettes, an all-female band from 1939.

 Sandy West

The Runaways’ groundbreaking SoCal sound would lack the necessary punch without drummer Sandy West, who is frequently quoted as saying, “Girls invented Punk Rock, not England.” In the same decade as Karen Carpenter, Sandy West played drums with a more boisterous sensibility than anyone had ever seen before. They burst onto the scene with their rock ‘n’ roll style. She continued to rock out for decades with her Sandy West Band even after the Runaways boom. Listen to The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” for that well-known punk sound that was not well-known when it was released in 1976.

Evelyn Glennie

The fantastic thing about Evelyn Glennie is that she is one of the best drummers in the world while being nearly deaf. She performs most of the time while sitting barefoot on the drums and is skilled at using the appropriate instrument. As a multi-percussionist, Evelyn is unlikely to be seated before a drum kit. She also composes music and is regarded as one of the most well-known modern music performers. Scotland’s Aberdeenshire is where Evelyn Glennie was born in 1965. She started to lose hearing when she was 8 but could feel recordings when she clamped the speakers between her legs. Evelyn states that she had to teach other body areas to sense the music because she could not utilize her ears. She struggled to hear, but she had to. Her nearly 100 annual concerts attest to her exceptional talent.
